Andrea Petagna’s diving header in the opening three minutes has given SPAL the half-time lead over Cagliari.
Both sides were coming off heavy defeats and in need of a boost. Everton Luiz was suspended for the hosts, who also missed Mattia Valoti, while Alfred Gomis returned in place of Vanja Milinkovic-Savic in goal. The Sardinians were still without Ragnar Klavan and Diego Farias.
It took just two minutes and 28 seconds to break through, as Manuel Lazzari surged down the right and floated his cross back to where Andrea Petagna had peeled away from his marker for a diving header from 10 yards. Alessio Cragno might’ve had it covered, if not for a deflection off Darijo Srna.
Petagna almost had a second on 12 minutes, stinging Cragno’s gloves at the near post after a Mohamed Fares cross was intercepted.
Joao Pedro and Artur Ionita had shots charged down, then Filippo Romagna’s glancing header from a corner skimmed the far post with Leonardo Pavoletti at full stretch just unable to get the final touch.
Lazzari’s cross-shot flashed along the six-yard box and Pavoletti’s acrobatic volley was off target.
