London – Edinburgh climbed top of Pool 5 in the European Champions Cup with a 31-13 win over previously unbeaten Newcastle at Murrayfield on Friday.
Hamish Watson, Chris Dean and Blair Kinghorn all crossed the whitewash and Edinburgh were also awarded a penalty try, while Jaco van der Walt kicked 11 points in a bonus-point victory.
After narrow wins over Toulon and Montpellier, Newcastle suffered their first defeat of the competition to dent their hopes of playing in a home final at St James’ Park next May.
Elsewhere, Ulster moved level with leaders Racing 92 in Pool 4 following a 25-24 victory at Scarlets, who are heading for an early exit having lost all three of their games so far.
Ireland star Jacob Stockdale, fellow wing Henry Speight, centre Will Addison and No 8 Marcell Coetzee ran in tries for Ulster as they also secured a bonus point in Llanelli.
Two Steff Evans tries and a late try from Dan Davis couldn’t save Scarlets, whose hopes of matching last year’s run to the semi-finals appear all but over ahead of next Friday’s rematch with Ulster in Belfast.
