Newcastle United news and transfers LIVE – Benitez's fans message; January

Points not prizes

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has played down the significance of being nominated for manager of the month.

The Spaniard alongside Pep Guardiola, Manuel Pochettino, Jurgen Klopp, Marco Silva, and David Wagner, was put up for the award for winning three games out of three in November.

But speaking ahead of the game against Wolves this Sunday, Benitez while admitting it was good news made it clear that he’d rather win points than an award.

“Being nominated is fine but you have to win, what we would like to win is with the team at the end of the season, that would be more important than just one month.

“Yes,” he replied when asked if November’s results set the bar for the level of performances his side should be aiming for, ‘Obviously know we won three games, and for us it is more difficult to win three games than for Manchester City or Tottenham, but it still means nothing.

“It is not giving you points, we needs points and we need to be sure that at the end of the year we are fine. But it is good news.”
