Championship round-up: Maguire on the mark for Preston

Sean Maguire was on the scoresheet for the first time this season as Preston North End enjoyed 3-1 victory over high-flying Norwich City at Deepdale.

In an injury-interrupted campaign, the former Cork City striker scored on his 11th outing in the Championship this term, latching onto a loose ball inside the area and hammering home a left-footed strike from 15 yards, with his 69th minute strike adding to goals from Ben Davies and a Paul Gallagher penalty

Alan Browne was in midfield for the victors, with the Canaries grabbing a consolation goal in the last minute through Teemu Pukki, who were leapfrogged at the top of the table after Leeds United’s 2-1 win over Swansea City.

Preston sit in 13th place in the table, eight points outside of the play-off positions.

John Egan and David McGoldrick started in Sheffield United’s 1-0 win at home to Middlesborough, with substitute Richard Stearman getting the winner just after the hour mark with the Blades remaining in third place.

Nine-cap Republic of Ireland international Anthony Pilkington was part of the Wigan Athletic side that played out a goalless draw at home to Stoke City, with James McClean a second-half substitute for the Potters.

Richard Keogh was at the heart of the Derby County team that drew 1-1 away to Ipswich Town.

Tom Lawrence gave the visitors a second minute lead, but Ipswich, who had Alan Judge in midfield, struck in the second half through Jon Nolan, with County outside the play-offs on goal difference.

Conor Hourihane and Glenn Whelan were part of an Aston Villa side that fell to a 1-0 defeat to Brentford at Griffin Park.

Neal Maupay struck for the hosts in the final minute who climb to 15th place in the table, four points behind promotion-seeking Villa.

Republic of Ireland youth international Liam Kelly was part of the Reading side that left it late to take three points against Blackburn Rovers at the Madejski Stadium to move out of the drop zone.

Amari’i Bell struck for Rovers with eight minutes remaining to cancel out John Swift’s goal, but Nelson Oliveira netted in the 86th minute, with Derrrick Williams an unused substitute for the visitors.
